Sources of Air Pollution in Rustavi’s Industrial Area

Rustavi, a city of around 130,000 residents, has long been associated with heavy industry, which has led to significant air pollution. Since the second half of the 20th century, dozens of large and medium-sized enterprises have been established here — steel mills, cement plants, chemical factories, and facilities producing fertilizers and manganese compounds.

Although many factories have modernized their technologies and installed filtration systems in recent years, industry remains the main source of air pollution in the city. Up to 97% of particulate matter emissions, along with high levels of NO₂ and SO₂ originate from industry, placing Rustavi among one of the most polluted cities in Georgia.
