Air pollution in Georgia

Georgia faces a long-term problem with severe air pollution, which has serious impacts on the health of its citizens and the country's economy. According to the World Health Organization, the capital Tbilisi is one of the most affected areas in Europe - total pollution levels exceed WHO safety limits by up to three times. As a result, thousands of people die prematurely every year. Air pollution is not only a health risk, but also an economic burden - in 2018, the related costs amounted up to 3% of the country’s GDP.

The main sources of emissions include transport, industrial production, and domestic heating. Car traffic specifically is the most significant source in this regard - it contributes up to 71% of the total emissions, with a substantial part of these pollutants concentrated in the capital. Moreover, complex geographical conditions, including mountainous areas, prevent the natural dispersion of pollutants. The result is stagnant smog, which becomes a permanent part of the urban landscape.

The photo gallery you are about to open captures this reality in the form of industrial scenery and scenes from traffic-heavy areas of Georgia.
